Harriers' indifferent form continued with a disappointing exit from the FA Cup. Gary Whild made several changes to the team that had lost at Halifax a week ago, bringing in Josh O'Keefe for his first start of the season, Kyle Storer on his return from suspension and Reece Styche, relegating Aman Verma and Nathan Blissett to the bench while Jack Byrne was suspended. With numbers thin Harriers were unable to name a full complement of seven substitutes. The visitors need just 15 minutes to take the lead; Jai Reason pounced on O'Keefe's weak header and hit a curving shot from 25 yards out that gave Danny Lewis in the Harriers goal no chance of saving. Midway through the half a strong run from the lively Ahmed Obeng, running most of the length of the pitch, set up a chance for Callum Gittings but he fired wide across the face of goal from 20 yards out. At the other end Reason went close again ten minutes before the break with a free-kick from the left-hand corner of the penalty area that Lewis did well to tip over the bar for a corner. Early in the second half O'Keefe had a chance but his shot from distance was straight at Ross Flitney in The Spitfires' goal. On 52 minutes Harriers had a big penalty appeal turned down when Obeng's cross appeared to be handled deliberately; Eastleigh counter-attacked and almost doubled their advantage with a shot from former Harrier James Constable who fired over the bar. Harriers had the ball in the net just past the hour mark but Chey Dunkley's header was ruled out for offside; Eastleigh's offside trap was efficient throughout the afternoon and Harriers didn't appear to have the guile to break it down. The last good chance Harriers had to draw level came midway through the half; Marvin Johnson's pass set Nathan Blissett Eastleigh on the left and his cross picked out Styche who, with no time to react, headed straight at the keeper. The game fizzled out in the closing stages as the visitors were comfortable in their lead without being inspiring while Harriers lacked the urgency to get themselves back into the game and at least earn a replay. |
