Harriers grabbed an excellent victory at Wrexham to return to the top of the table and ensure that the title race will be decided on the final day of the season. The day started off well for Harriers with title rivals Mansfield suffering a surprise defeat at Braintree, meaning that by the time they kicked-off in front of the TV cameras at The Racecourse Harriers knew that victory would return them to the top of the league. Steve Burr made two changes to the team that had beaten Lincoln last time out with James Vincent and Marvin Johnson returning to the starting line-up in place of Keith Briggs and Kevin Pilkington. After a tense opening to the match it was Vincent who gave Harriers the lead, drilling a low shot through a crowded penalty area after Michael Gash's free-kick had hit the wall and rebound straight to him. Gash himself went close to doubling the advantage in stoppage time but turned Johnson's low left-wing cross wide of the near post. Danny Lewis had already saved from Danny Wright early in the second half before Wrexham drew level just past the hour mark Wright giving Lewis no chance, this time, with a blistering shot from the edge of the penalty area that flew into the top corner. Harriers didn't let the setback set them back for too long and they went close to regaining the lead soon afterwards; Johnson on the right wing picking out Mickey Demetriou aat the far post who turned the ball back across goal to create a chance for Anthony Malbon but he was denied by a good block by Leon Clowes. The winner came on 71 minutes; Demetriou lofted a long pass over the home defence giving Gash a clear run on goal and he finished with aplomb with an excellent lob over Chris Maxwell to record his sixth goal for the club. Substitute Callum Gittings could have made the game safe deep in stoppage time but he fired wide after a good passing movement by Gash and Ryan Rowe crafted the opening for him. The miss didn't matter, though, and the final whistle followed shortly afterwards to spark scenes of pandemonium amongst the 602 travelling supporters. Harriers know that they can pick up the title if Mansfield are beaten in their midweek game at Hereford and they themselves then beat relegation threatened Stockport at Aggboroough in the final game of the season. A draw at Edgar Street would mean that the title would go to the team that picks up the best result on the final day. If Mansfield win at Hereford then Harriers would need to win against Stockport and hope that The Stags slip up against Wrexham. |
