Match Report by St@tto

Harriers' hopes of making the play-offs suffered a setback when a lacklustre performance saw them drop points at struggling Eastbourne.

The result was enough to end Eastbourne's two-season stay at the top level of non-league football; condemning them to Conference South next season.  On a glorious afternoon on the south coast Harriers were slow to get going and at times looked like a team thinking about their summer holidays.

Things may have turned out differently had Harriers got an early goal; after 16 minutes Keith Briggs played a neat 1-2 with Mike Williams before switching the direction of play to find Lee Vaughan who drilled 25-yeard shot just wide.  The home team made Harriers pay for that miss just ahead of the half-hour mark; Richard Pacquette allowed to much time to turn on the edge of the penalty area a fire a low shot past Danny Lewis.  Before the break Harriers could have grabbed an equaliser but Briggs' free-kick hit Nick Wright, catching him by surprise before he could control and the home defence scrambled the ball away to safety.

Early in the second half Harriers should have get back on terms but Michael Briscoe's free-kick from 25 yards out was poorly executed and flew out of the ground.  Just past the hour Harriers were given a scare again when Pacquette twice drew saves from Lewis.

The equaliser eventually came fifteen minutes from the end; Williams headed the ball into the goalmouth from out on the left; home keeper Rikki Banks dropped it under pressure from substitute Jamille Matt and Tom Shaw was on hand to follow up and lash it into the back of the net.

Harriers were unable to build on this, though, and it was Eastbourne who were the more likely to grab a winner.  In stoppage time Steve Brinkhurst fired wide across the face of goal from the inside right channel and even further into time added on George Purcell saw his free-kick pushed away by Lewis.
