Referee: Steve Martin (Staffordshire) |
A goal in each half gave Harriers their first-ever victory at Field Mill, stretching their unbeaten run to 12 games and keeping them firmly in the play-off places. The outcome was far more comfortable than the scoreline suggests; lively Harriers, fresh from a two-week break without a game, created a string of chances in the first 20 minutes with Matt Blair in particular a threat to the home defence. The visitors needed just fifteen minutes to break the deadlock; Nick Wright's pass through the heart of the Town defence put Chris McPhee clear and he was able to slip the ball under home keeper David Grof to record his 16th goal of the season. Harriers should have had the game wrapped up by haf-time; Grof had kept out efforts by Blair, Keith Briggs, Sean Canham and Tom Shaw before being beaten by McPhee. Wright went close on 26 minutes with a dipping shot from 20 yards that went just wide of the post and then he headed over the bar after McPhee and Blair had combined to set him up. On the hour mark Canham should have doubled the advantage; Blair on the right found Lee Vaughan who sent over a excellent cross to the far post but Canham couldn't get his header on target. Backed by 350 travelling supporters Harriers doubled their advantage just three minutes later, though, through skipper Briggs, scoring against one of his former clubs with a 20-yard effort into the top corner after being set up by Wright who made a good run on the left wing to open up the home team again. After their poor showing in the first half the home team looked better in the second but took until the 79th minute to pull a goal back, former Harrier Adam Murray lashing the ball past Danny Lewis. By then, though, the deficit should have been even more as substitutes Callum Gittings - on for the injured Shaw - and Lee Morris combined with a short-corner routine to set up Canham again who headed over the bar. The remainder of the game was comfortable for Harriers, though, and they were able to see out time to take the points. The only downside was the loss of Shaw through injury shortly before half-time. |
