Match Report by St@tto

Harriers suffered their first league defeat in nine games losing out to Newport in a five-goal thriller that saw County record their first win at Aggborough in 58 years.

Steve Burr made a number of changes to the side that had been knocked out of the FA Trophy in their previous game 17 days earlier.  Tom Shaw, Ollie Thorne and Matt Blair all returned to the starting line-up and Jamille Matt was given his first start.  Thanks to the bad weather that had caused that 17 day gap between matches Harriers were a little rusty and the visitors were the quicker to get into their stride.

After just six minutes the dangerous Craig Reid worked his way into the Harriers penalty before setting up ex-Harrier Darryl Knights who saw his shot saved by Danny Lewis.  It took until the 27th minute before Harriers really threatened; Blair broke clear through the middle but as he tried to take the ball round visiting 'keeper Glyn Thompson he was denied by the keeper's fingertips getting just enough of a touch on the ball to knock it out of his stride.

The first goal came just two minutes later an over-hit cross from the right wing was kept in play by on-loan Sam Deering who cut inside before rolling the ball into the path of Reid who tucked it neatly inside the near post just our of the reach of the diving Lewis.  Shortly afterwards Reid could have doubled the advantage but after making space for himself with a good turn in the penalty area he shot weakly at Lewis

Eight minutes before the break County doubled their lead when Reid was set up with a long ball through the middle; after holding off one challenge he was halted by a good tackle from Shaw who took the ball cleanly but managed to direct it beyond the reach of Lewis and inside the far post.

After the break Harriers managed to get going and though they had reduced the deficit; Blair set up Lee Morris who saw his shot beat Thompson only to come back off the post.  Matt was quickest to react, though, and fired in the rebound but the linesman's flag was up and the goal was ruled out.

Harriers did get one goal back on 61 minutes; Callum Gittings' free-kick from the left beat Thompson who was under pressure form Keith Briggs and was bundled in at the far post by Blair.  Three minutes later the scores were level; Morris set up Matt who had a clear run at goal; his chip should have been kept out by Thompson but the keeper's hands only served to help the ball into the net.

Matt and Morris combined again to set up Blair after 71 minutes but his shot to the near post was saved by Thompson who pushed it round the post for a corner.  At the other end Harriers were thankful to Thorne who headed off the line from Chris Todd. Eight minutes from the end Harriers were sunk, though, when former Harrier Paul Bignot was on hand to fire in the rebound after Lewis had saved from Reid.
