Match Report by St@tto

Harriers recorded their fourth home win in a row thanks to Chris McPhee's seventh goal of the season and ended Rushden's run of good form.

The win lifted Harriers up to eighth in the league, their highest position since Opening Day, continuing their steady upward progress and moving them to within three points of the Play-Off places.  Skipper Keith Briggs, Dave Hankin and Lee Morris returned to the starting line-up, Briggs back after injury kept him out of the previous game at Southport.

Morris was involved in the game straight away, getting on the end of Hankin's corner from the right and hooking a volley across the face of goal.  McPhee's goal came on 16 minutes, scoring from the penalty spot after Hankin had been brought down by Michael Corcoran. The visitors could, and should, have got back on terms before the interval but were denied by poor finishing, the woodwork, and good saves from Danny Lewis.  In the five minutes after falling behind Diamonds had chances that fell to Tim Sills who hit the bar and Rene Howe whose shot was saved.  Shortly before the break Rushden went close again, Lewis Spence's pass putting Jamie Day in on the left, the overlapping full-back crossing to the near post where Aaron O'Connor connected with a glancing header that went over the bar.

Harriers got stronger after the break and could have increased their lead.  Early in the half Morris knocked a free-kick short to Michael Briscoe just outside the penalty area but his shot was blasted into the wall.  Shortly afterwards Diamonds failed to clear a Hankin corner from the right properly and Lee Vaughan's deep cross was headed over the bar by Briscoe.

Rushden didn't look like getting back into the game now, however, until a frantic finale when they threw everything forward in the last few minutes and in the last minute of the game Howe stabbed a close range effort into the side netting.
