Match Report by St@tto

A very disappointing performance from Harriers saw them crash to defeat on their first visit to Spytty Park and slide into the relegation zone.

Showing three changes from the team that drew with Wrexham in midweek - Lee Vaughan and Aman Verma coming in for their debuts and Marc Williams making his first start in place of Jack Byrne, Lee Morris and Callum Gittings - Harriers were soon on the back foot as Newport, who included former Harriers Robbie Matthews, Darryl Knights and Paul Bignot in their starting line-up, attacked from the start.

In the opening minutes Charlie Henry got free on the right and flashed a shot across the face of goal to give Harriers an early warning. Harriers responded with a couple of chances; Dave Hankin's corner from the right was headed over the bar by Marc Williams and debutant Verma fired wide from 25 yards out.

Midway through the half a long clearance straight down the middle of the park put Craig Reid in scoring position, his shot was parried by Danny Lewis and Mike Williams had to scramble the ball away off the line.  Harriers' best chance of the half came on 26 minutes; Marc Williams jinked his way into the penalty area and took the ball around Glyn Thompson in the County goal and then missed his kick and sent the ball wide of the target.

Ten minutes before the break County won a corner on the right, Lewis flapped at it and had to be rescued by Chris McPhee who cleared Chris Todd's header off the line. Having been given a couple of warnings Harriers finally fell behind on 35 minutes; a free-kick scored, inevitably, by Matthews who struck his shot from beyond 25 yards out, around the wall and out of the reach of Lewis. By the interval Vaughan had been called upon to make another goal line clearance, this time from Reid and Matthews had gone close with another free-kick but Lewis this time managed to push it round the post for a corner.  Before the break, though, it was 2-0, Keith Briggs penalised for handling the ball in the penalty area, one-time Harriers trialist Reid scoring from the spot.

Early in the second half Reid added the third, another soft penalty awarded when Bignot went to ground under the almost nonexistent challenge of Verma, to put Newport completely in charge. Harriers offered next to no threat with Marc Williams getting no support from the midfield and it wasn't until Lee Morris came on 20 minutes from the end that they began to play.

With 15 minutes left a 30-yard free-kick taken short by Morris set up Michael Briscoe who blasted wide.  Shortly afterwards Morris broke away on the left and crossed low to the far post where Marc Williams couldn't find the target.  Mike Williams crossed from the left for Morris but his loping shot was held by Thompson.  With just three minutes left Hankin's left wing free-kick was not cleared properly and McPhee saw his follow-up header come back off the post.
