Referee: James Adcock (Nottinghamshire) |
Harriers fought back from a disastrous start to save a point at Wrexham and went close to taking all three. Showing two changes from the team that lost to Mansfield at the weekend - Tom Sharpe in for the injured Marc Albrighton and Lee Morris in for Chris McPhee - Harriers got off to the worst possible start; failing to clear their lines properly from a throw on the Wrexham left they didn't close down former Harrier Dean Keates who knocked the ball back into the penalty area for David Brown who looped a header over Danny Lewis with just three minutes on the clock. Two minutes later things got worse; Mike Williams tangled with Declan Walker in the Harriers penalty area and didn't get enough on his clearance which fell to Keates who blasted a 20-yard shot straight back into the top corner. Harriers worked themselves back into the game, however, and on 14 minutes Dave Hankin's pass set up Nick Wright who saw his shot blocked by Scott Shearer in the Wrexham goal at the expense of a corner. From that corner Tom Sharpe forced the ball home only to have the goal disallowed as Wright was in an offside position on the goal-line. On the half-hour mark Keates created another opening for the home side with a free kick from the left wing that found the head of Marvin Andrews but he couldn't control the ball and sent it wide of the far post. Two minutes before the break Brown tested Lewis with a 30-yard shot that was comfortable for the keeper to gather in. In stoppage time Morris' pass through the centre set Wright away, he held off the challenge of a Wrexham defender before taking the ball round Shearer and rolling it into the empty net. Harriers needed just six minutes of the second half to draw level; the same Morris/Wright combination worked again as Morris' pass set up Wright to charge into the penalty area on the left and stroke his shot past Shearer. Wrexham fell apart and looked nervous every time Harriers attacked; the home support began to turn on manager Dean Saunders and before long it was Harriers who looked the most likely to go on and win the game. Just past the hour mark Morris won the ball on the touchline on the right and cut inside, running right across the face of the Wrexham penalty area, but having done the hard part scuffed his shot and made it easy for Shearer to save. Shortly afterwards Keith Briggs went close with a 35-yard free kick that went narrowly wide of Shearer's left-hand post. Five minutes from the end Harriers had a strong shout for a penalty turned down when the referee didn't see a handball by a Wrexham defender and so the visitors had to settle for a point. |
