Robbie Matthews made his debut following his midweek transfer from Salisbury City but he was unable to help Harriers to overcome a weak Ebbsfleet side who had their goalkeeper Lance Cronin to thank for earning them a point. With Matthews coming in alongside Matt Barnes-Homer in attack David McDermott was relegated to the subs' bench and Chris McPhee dropped back into midfield. The conditions were not the best for good football with a stiff breeze blowing across the pitch but Harriers adapted the better and were soon getting on top of their hosts. As early as the ninth minute Brian Smikle did well to keep the ball in play on the left and pulled it back to Darryl Knights who saw his shot saved by Cronin; former Ebbsfleet player McPhee hit his follow-up attempt wide. Moments later a sweeping passing move involving five players ended with McPhee's low cross from the right finding Smikle who had his shot parried by Cronin for a corner. Late in the half Cronin was in the way again as he made a fine double save from Barnes-Homer and then shortly afterwards saved Smikle's close range header. After the break Harriers had most of the possession again but they did not create as many clear-cut opportunities as they had in the first half. Fifteen minutes from the end substitute Kyle Hadley set Barnes-Homer away on the right wing; he crossed to the near post where Smikle had made a good run but could not direct his header on target. Shortly after that Matthews flicked on a long ball into the path of Barnes-Homer but his shot from a narrow angle went across the face of goal with nobody following up to apply the finishing touch. In stoppage time Harriers should have won the game although in truth they should have had it won long before then; Hadley's pass sent Duane Courtney running down the right wing, he got into the penalty area and crossed low for Matthews who saw his shot saved by Cronin and then Barnes-Homer's follow-up was blocked at the expense of a corner by Will Salmon who threw himself in the way. |
