Match Report by St@tto

Harriers recorded their first win of the season with an emphatic victory over Altrincham, their biggest league win for 20 years against The Robins.

Mark Yates made sweeping changes to the side that had been beaten soundly at Mansfield in the previous game; out went Michael Bowler, Paul Bignot, Dean Bennett, Darryl Knights and Simon Russell; in came Keith Lowe for his debut, Martin Brittain and David McDermott for their first starts, Lee Baker back from injury and Matt Barnes-Homer.

The changes paid dividends quickly; a fifth minute foul on Brittain led to the same player delivering a wicked free-kick into the penalty area for an unmarked Mark Creighton to power a header past Stuart Coburn in the Altrincham goal.  At the other end Altrincham offered little, but did have a chance to level the scores shortly after falling behind; Warren Peyton's 25-yard free-kick blasted into the wall was a waste.

After 33 minutes the game became surrounded in controversy; Creighton had a shot well saved by Coburn and his follow-up effort was blocked on the line by Chris Lane, the referee spotted that Lane had used his hand and awarded a penalty and sent the defender off much to the consternation of the visitors.  Justin Richards stepped forward to take the penalty and blasted it high to Coburn's left to record his fourth goal of the season.  Before the break The Robins could have got a goal back but Greg Young headed over from close range from Matt Doughty's left-wing free-kick.

Harriers took control of the game after the interval, and threatened to add to their score straight away.  Barnes-Homer exchanged passes with Richards, taking the return and firing a shot from the right corner of the penalty area that flew only millimetres over the bar.  Shortly afterwards a good passing move opened up the Altrincham defence and ended with Andy Ferrell bringing a good save from Coburn; Barnes-Homer's follow-up crashed back off the post.  Barnes-Homer could have put the result beyond doubt before the hour mark; having already missed two chances he beat the offside trap and bided his time as Coburn came out and then shot into the side netting.

Doughty almost scored an own goal, stretching to reach Baker's low left-wing cross he turned the ball goalwards but Coburn got down smartly to grab it.  The third goal wasn't long in coming, however, Barnes-Homer got the ball on the left and played it inside to McDermott; his shot was blocked but he managed to knock it into path of Brittain who lashed a superb shot from 20 yards beyond the reach of Coburn into the far corner of the net.

Ten minutes from time a surging run from Russ Penn opened up the visitors' defence and set up substitute Knights; his shot was parried by Coburn but the striker should have done much better.  A pass from Penn sent substitute Brian Smikle away on the right wing and he completed the scoring with an excellent lob from a narrow angle, only his second goal for the club and both coming against Altrincham.  In the last minute Altrincham sub Chris Senior had a chance to record the visitors' first shot on target but fired his shot wide.
