Match Report by St@tto

Harriers' unbeaten run was brought to a disappointing end by a spirited Altrincham side who recorded their first home win in two months.

Mark Yates was able to pick from a full squad, welcoming back four players who had missed the previous game through suspension and brought three of them - Russ Penn, Andy Ferrell and James Constable - straight back into the side.  There was still no place in the starting line-up, however, for skipper Stuart Whitehead.

The first half was a non-event; strong winds blowing rain across the pitch, with thunder and lightning overhead, spoiled the game completely.  The storm even led to referee Lee Metcalfe taking the players off for fifteen minutes until the storm abated.  On their return to action the only time anyone looked even remotely like scoring was in the 26th minute when Gavin Hurren's free kick was partially blocked and the loose ball fell to Michael McGrath whose 20-yard shot clipped the outside of Stuart Coburn's left-hand post.

After the break the rain stopped and the wind dropped allowing Harriers to gradually take control of the game against a poor Altrincham team.  An inspired substitution ten minutes into the half sparked Harriers; Justin Richards, on for Constable, slipped the ball through the inside-right channel for Iyseden Christie to run on to, he finished well from a narrow angle to record his sixth goal of the season.

This should have been enough to see Harriers step up and go one to put the game out of reach but instead the home side drew level after 63 minutes.  Having an appeal for a foul on the edge of the Harriers penalty area turned down, play continued with the ball running to James Jennings on the left wing and his cross to the far post was met by an unmarked Thomas Cahill who diverted it back past Scott Bevan in the Harriers goal.  Twelve minutes later things went from bad to worse for Harriers as a free-kick on the right wing picked out Peyton on the opposite flank who dispatched a low shot past Bevan from just outside the penalty area to turn the game upon its head.

Harriers huffed and puffed to get back into the game from then on but never really looked convincing enough to achieve it.  Altrincham were now a different team and put up a spirited rearguard action to make sure that they held on to the points; the closest Harriers came was nine minutes from time when Ferrell set Michael Blackwood free on the left and his cross was headed over at the far post by Mark Creighton.
