Match Report by St@tto

Harriers' inability to react to going a goal behind brought to an end their brief upturn in results and allowed Crawley to end their run of four straight defeats.

With Russ Penn suspended Jamie McClen was recalled to the starting line-up in his place and, surprisingly, Michael McGrath made way for Michael Blackwood.  The changes didn't seem to disrupt Harriers as they began the game at a high tempo and looked set to continue where they had left off in the previous games.

Bottom-of-the-league Crawley looked like a side at the foot of the table as they were forced onto the back foot from the start.  Harriers could have taken the lead as early as the eighth minute when a training-ground free-kick was curled just over the bar by Jake Sedgemore.  Simon Russell was lively in the first half, giving his best performance for some time, and his cross from the right was flapped at by Ben Hamer in the visitors goal and headed clear at the far post at the expense of a corner.  Shortly afterwards Iyseden Christie set up Russell again and this time his cross from the right was headed over by Andy White.

After setting up two chances Russell decided to go for goal himself; jinking through the defence from the right wing his low shot was turned round the near post by Hamer.  Just after the half hour mark Russell turned provider again, setting Christie free on the left; his shot was saved at the near post by Hamer at the expense of another corner.  The corner was only half cleared and the ball was eventually worked to McClen who fired a dipping shot just over the bar.

Despite having the lion's share of possession Harriers could not take advantage of their superiority and were forced to go in to the interval all square.  They were made to pay for their profligacy four minutes after the break when Gavin Hurren handled in the penalty area.  Scott Rendell sent Scott Bevan the wrong way from the spot but was forced  to take his kick again by referee Andy Turner; for his second attempt Rendell went the opposite way, firing to Bevan's right but Bevan went the wrong way again.

Harriers' heads dropped and they were unable to reach the levels of performance that they had in the first half.  They huffed and puffed but it was twenty minutes into the half before they threatened an equaliser; Sedgemore's deep cross from the right was headed over by Christie at the far post.  Twelve minutes from the end White went close with a curling shot that was just wide of the far post.

In stoppage time the visitors could have doubled their advantage but Bevan got down well to save Michael Bostwick's 20-yard shot on the turn.  Deeper into time added on Harriers were almost gifted an equaliser when Jonny Harkness' cross was sliced goalwards by Ben Judge but Hamer was able to hold on.
