Match Report by St@tto

Martin O'Connor enjoyed his first win in charge of Harriers as they cruised to their biggest win since scoring four at Swansea in October 2002.

Harriers were boosted by the return to the side of Iyseden Christie who passed a late fitness test on his injured neck and replaced Taiwo Atieno in who dropped down to the bench.  The only other change from the side that lost at Accrington was Michael Blackwood coming into the side in place of Marc Pugh who has returned to Burnley.

The home team were on top right from the start and could have raced into an early lead.  Within the first six minutes the frame of the goal had twice come to the rescue of the visitors.  First Russ Penn struck the bar with a shot from the edge of the penalty area after being set up by Christie and then from a long Danny Lewis clearance Simon Heslop latched onto the ball in the inside right channel and struck a dipping shot against the bar with Ian Dunbavin well beaten.

The early onslaught continued and the Scarborough defence was breached after 13 minutes; Terry Fleming's corner from the right was met by Mark Jackson with a powerful header that Dunbavin could only parry and Lee Thompson was on hand to force the ball in from close range for his first goal for the club.  Ten minutes later Harriers doubled their advantage when Patrick Flynn picked out Blackwood with a great cross from the right and he was able to guide his header into the top corner of the net comfortably.

The first half was one-way traffic and Harriers continued to create chance after chance.  Johnny Mullins met a Fleming corner but although his header beat Dunbavin Lee Fowler was well placed on the goalline to clear and then another long clearance by Lewis set Thompson free on the right but his shot lacked control and went wide of the near post.

Shortly before the break the visitors had a half chance with a free kick on the left; the ball cannoned off the wall into the goalmouth but Wayne Hatswell was on hand to clear before any Scarborough player could capitalise.  The third goal came soon afterwards; a Fleming free kick from deep on the left was floated into the penalty area and Christie go away from his marker to guide a header inside the near post for his eleventh goal of the season.  There could have been another in the last minute of the half; Thompson and Christie hustled Dunbavin, making him hurry his clearance which fell to Blackwood whose long-range lob was not far off target.

The second half continued in the same vein with Harriers controlling the game against a very poor Scarborough side.  Nine minutes into the new period Harriers were awarded a penalty when Heslop was pulled back by Carl Cook.  Surprisingly Jackson came forward to take the kick but his shot was too close to Dunbavin who saved diving to his left; the ball came loose and Heslop was quickest to react and stabbed in the fourth goal.

With the game in the bag Harriers were able to cruise through the latter stages and were lucky not to concede a goal midway through the half when Scarborough squandered their best chance of the game.  Lewis only parried Ashley Lyth's long range shot and the ball fell invitingly for substitute Ian Clark who had the goal at his mercy but was so slow in shooting that Lewis was able to reach back and gather the ball.

Dunbavin kept the score down for Scarborough with two great saves late on.  Christie received the ball in midfield and ran at the heart of the defence before rolling the ball into the path of Blackwood to his left and he hit a powerful shot from the edge of the area that Dunbavin saved.  Next Harriers were awarded a free kick on the right that was floated into the penalty area and knocked down by Jackson for Hatswell who hit a stinging volley that Dunbavin pushed around the post for a corner.

In the end it was a comfortable win for Harriers that could, and probably should, have bee by a greater margin.  It was unfortunate, however, that despite reduced admission rates there were only 957 hardy souls there to see it.
