Referee: Danny McDermid (Aldershot) |
After showing a glimmer of improvement in the victory at Gravesend Harriers slipped back to the form of the previous games and lost to bottom club Crawley. Unchanged Harriers would have expected to build upon the victory gained three days earlier but soon found themselves with an uphill struggle when Daryl Burgess turned Andy Lindegaard's low cross from the right into his own net from close range. There were barely two minutes on the clock. A poor game saw little good football at either end, Crawley looked like the team at the foot of the table and Harriers looked like a team heading down to meet them. The home team, buoyed by the early goal, made themselves hard to break down. They were quick into the tackle and for a while it looked as though the game would turn nasty; Terry Fleming found his way into the referee's notebook after 17 minutes after voicing his opinions too strongly. Harriers were hesitant at the back and could have fallen further behind; a Simon Wormull corner from the right found Ben Judge at the near post but he couldn't direct his header and it went wide of the far post and then a free-kick from deep on the right was not cleared properly and Jamie Cade blazed his shot well over the bar. Eventually Harriers tested Scott Ward in the home goal; Simon Russell did well on the left and his cross was too high for Iyseden Christie but reached Michael Blackwood unmarked at the far post, he took too long over his shot, however, and hit it straight at Ward. After the break Harriers were expected to control of the game and force their way back into contention but it was not until just short of the hour mark that they went close with a Blackwood free-kick that went inches wide. As the game wore on the home team were more happy to get bodies behind the ball but they did still create the occasional opportunity without testing Danby; a cross from the right by Daryl Clare found Lindegaard but he headed over the bar. Substitute Taiwo Atieno went close for Harriers; chasing a ball through the inside-left channel he lobbed the onrushing Ward but his effort went wide of the far post. Eight minutes from the end the home team managed their first shot on target; Cade got in behind the Harriers defence and drilled his shot under Danby to double the advantage. Harriers' evening got worse moments later when Fleming again decided to argue with the referee and was shown his second yellow card of the game and was sent off. In the last few minutes Crawley could have gone further ahead when Cade's cross from the left found Stuart Douglas who headed horribly wide at the near post. |
