Match Report by St@tto |
Once again Harriers' discipline let them down and they had to play half an hour of the game with ten men. Abdou Sall was the one to take an early bath on this occasion after he picked up two yellow cards in the space of thirteen minutes. The game was a typical, dull, end of season 0-0 with little to spark any interest until Sall's dismissal. Harriers boss Jan Molby made changes to the team that had beaten Huddersfield in the previous game, this time enforced, with the recall of Lee Jenkins in place of Ian Foster whose loan has ended; Adam Murray returned to the squad on the bench after missing the last game to witness the birth of his daughter Jolie. There was very little incident in the first half, Mark Yates hit a fifth minute drive from 25 yards that Shaun Marshall in the home goal did well to tip over the bar for a corner. At the other end, Stevland Angus should have opened the scoring two minutes before the break when he showed great trickery to break into the Harriers penalty area in the inside right channel but then, like the defender that he is, rounded off the move with a woeful finish that hit the side netting. After the break the game needed less than two minutes to come to life; an encounter between Sall and United's half-time sub Daniel Webb ended with the two players squaring up to each other and both being shown the yellow card. Cambridge had a good chance to open the scoring soon afterwards; Jermaine Easter outpaced the Harriers defence and broke in on goal but John Danby was quickly off his line to save well. On the hour Sall was penalised again after he brought down Easter and was shown his second yellow card which meant that for the second game in a row Harriers were reduced to ten men. Despite the handicap Harriers still tried to get their attacking game going, an intricate passing move involving Yates and Murray ended with a Simon Brown shot from outside the penalty area that Marshall held on to comfortably. Next a Steve Burton free kick from the right was tipped over the bar for a corner by Marshall and from the resulting flag kick Murray found an unmarked Yates at the near post but he directed his header wide when he should have done much better. At the other end an Ashley Nicholls cross from the right flashed across the face of goal just out of reach of the onrushing Webb. As the game went into stoppage time John Williams needlessly gave away a free kick 25 yards from goal when he fouled Adam Tann; Shane Tudor's kick was arrowing for the top corner but Danby stretched at full length to push it around the post. Finally, with almost the last kick of the game Jesper Christiansen could have won the game for Harriers; Williams crossed from the right and Marshall could only get his fingertips to it and push it out to the Dane who lashed it high over the bar with the goal at his mercy and Harriers had to settle for a point. |
