Match Report by St@tto

James McQuilkin's free-kick was enough to give Harriers victory against promotion rivals Salford City in their first-ever meeting.

Salford, playing at this level of the game for the first time this season, gave a good account of themselves, particularly as they had to play the second half with ten men, but Harriers were in control of the game throughout.

Harriers took the lead after just 8 minutes; Tyrone Williams was scythed down by Richie Wellens 25 yards or more from goal and a training ground routine saw Elton Ngwatala roll the ball to McQuilkin who despatched a dipping shot beyond the reach of Jay Lynch in the City goal.

Ten minutes later Ngwatala could have doubled the lead; picking up the ball deep in his own half he ran through the inside left channel into the visitors' penalty area but ended his run with a woeful shot that went wide.  Shortly afterwards a McQuilkin corner from the right was flicked on at the near post by Keith Lowe to Williams who could only guide the ball over the bar.

Late in the half Harriers should have increased their lead when Williams and Tyrell Waite combined on the right with the latter crossing for an unmarked Mani Dieseruvwe who headed over the bar.

The game came to life seconds into the second half when City captain Simon Grand made a late lunge on Dieseruvwe and was sent off.  The game threatened to get out of hand at this point, in the space of the next ten minutes a further three players - two Harriers, one City - had their names taken.

Harriers continued to create chances; Dieseruvwe shot on the turn just over the bar and then had a shot parried after a McQuilkin corner with the impressive Jordan Tunnicliffe head the rebound just wide.

In stoppage time Harriers were almost made to pay for their missed chances when Sam Walker's free-kick from deep on the left found Jordan Hulme at the far post but his header was straight at Sam Hornby and easy for the keeper to gather.
