For the second time this season Harriers suffered cup defeat at Stourbridge, this time bowing out of the FA Trophy. Earlier in the season Harriers gave their worst performance in years as they crashed out of the FA Cup; this time they gave a better performance and even took the lead but they were unable to make their advantage tell and allowed sloppy defending to cost them the game. Harriers started the game brightly and in the first ten minutes spent more time in the Stourbridge half than they had in the whole of the first half of the FA Cup tie. Dino Fazlic had a shot blocked and Gurjit Singh fired one over the bar as Harriers looked to take the early initiative. A strong wind, and later rain, spoiled the game, though, and after the early bright start the encounter became scrappy. In the last minute of the first half Stourbridge's best chance so far fell to Karl Hawley who fired over the bar. After the interval Harriers started to play some good football; just three minutes into the half Ben Whitfield pounced on a poor back-pass to break clear but his shot was straight at The Glassboys' stand-in keeper Charlie Price. A minute later he found himself in a similar position after being set up by Zaine Francis-Angol but again fired straight at the keeper. At the other end a good run by Chris Lait on the right wing ended with a cross to Matt Dodd who headed over the bar. Harriers took the lead on 55 minutes; Whitfield ran at the defence on the left before attempting to set up Singh. His pass was short, though, and should have been cleared by Price but the keeper mis-kicked allowing Singh to pounce and fire into the unguarded net. Just past the hour mark Harriers should have doubled their lead; Luke Maxwell carried the ball forward on the left before allowing Francis-Angol to cross. The cross found Matt Barnes-Homer who should have done better but his shot was weak and Singh's follow-up was saved by Price. Stourbridge drew level midway through the half; Dean Snedker saved well to deny Lait but Harriers failed to clear and when the ball was played back into the danger zone Lait was on hand to lash his shot into the top corner. Barely two minutes later the home side were in front; Harriers failed to deal with a long throw from the left leaving Dan Scarr with an easy task to sweep the ball home from close range. Harriers' heads went down once they were behind and they went from looking like they would win the game comfortably to looking incapable of getting back into it. things then went from bad to worse for the visitors twelve minutes from the end when Dino Fazlic was sent off after a reckless challenge on Tom Tonks. For the first time ever Harriers were knocked out of the FA Cup and FA Trophy by the same team and for the first time since the 1984-85 season knocked out of both competitions by teams from lower leagues when they were knocked out by King's Lynn and Gretna. |
