Harriers fought back from two goals down to salvage a point but it wasn't enough to prevent them from slipping to the bottom of the league. Making their first-ever visit to Tranmere Harriers, showing two changes - Andre Wright in for Aman Verma and Reece Styche in for Gurjit Singh - from the team that was beaten by Forest Green at the weekend, started well and were comfortable against their hosts for the first quarter of an hour. Sloppy defending, though, was yet again a problem for Harriers as they fell behind in the 20th minute; having failed to clear a corner properly they were slow to react as Liam Ridehalgh played the ball back in from the left wing and both Liam Hogan and former Harrier Nathan Blissett were first to the ball with the former getting the vital touch to steer it past Alex Palmer to open the scoring. After Joe Clarke had fired wide from Adam Dawson's free-kick as Harriers pressed for an equaliser the home side doubled their advantage on 25 minutes. Scott Davies' goal kick was misjudged by Lathaniel Rowe-Turner letting in experienced striker Andy Mangan who turned Jordan Tunnicliffe inside out before slotting the ball past Palmer. On the half hour Harriers' defending was non-existent again as Hogan was allowed a free header from Ridehalgh's corner but he could only power the ball over the bar. At the other end Tahvon Campbell tested Davies but his shot had no real power and was an easy save. Harriers managed to hold on until the break without conceding further when it had looked at one stage that they would capitulate and take a heavy beating. After the interval Harriers came back into the game as the home side sat back on their lead and for the first fifteen minutes or so of the half the play was all with the visitors. Despite enjoying most of the possession Harriers could not find a way through to trouble Davies. It took until ten minutes from the end when Andrew Fox's cross from the left found Verma but his header was straight at the keeper. Six minutes from time Harriers reduced the deficit; Verma's header sent the ball away on the right wing, Singh gave chase and managed to keep it in play, cutting back into the penalty area and tucking his shot in off the foot of the near post to record his third goal of the season. Shortly afterwards Clarke saw a shot fumbled by Davies but there was no Harrier on hand to pounce on the loose ball and the home defence managed to scramble it away for a corner. In stoppage time Harriers grabbed an equaliser; Dawson's cross from the right was headed back across goal by Fox, a missed header by the defence allowed the ball to drop to Styche who brought it down before calmly slotting it into the bottom corner of the net. All of Harriers' work was nearly undone even further into time added on when substitute Marlon Jackson fired a shot against the post but Harriers managed to get the loose ball clear and hold on to take a point. |
