Match Report by St@tto

Defences went AWOL in a crazy game at Aggborough, Harriers twice coming from behind before beating Braintree by the odd goal in nine.

After the depths of boredom that were plumbed by those in attendance at Darlington at the weekend this was the complete opposite. Braintree, looking to end a four-game winless streak, dominated the game in the early stages against a Harriers side showing just one change with Scott Phelan coming on for Steve Guinan.

Inside the first ten minutes the warning signs were there for Harriers with Dean Lyness forced to make two saves from Ben Wright.  At the other end Harriers first decent chance fell to Callum Gittings who rose at the far post to meet Kyle Storer's free kick from deep on the left but his header was saved by Nathan McDonald in the Town goal.  Braintree went ahead through Sean Marks after 25 minutes; Lyness again saved from Wright, getting down to save his free-kick but Marks was quickest to react and pounced to fire in the loose ball from close range.

The lead lasted just a minute; Michael Briscoe's long ball set Nick Wright clear through the inside-right channel, he waited for his opportunity before sliding a shot past McDonald and in off the far post.  A swift counter-attacking move saw Braintree regain the lead on 32 minutes; Dominic Vose picked up the ball deep inside his own half and advanced with it before finding Marks who in turn set up Wright to fire in the second.  Before the break the visitors could have been further ahead when Marks received a long ball pumped forward from defence and hit a good shot that Lyness did equally well to save.

Five minutes after the break the game went crazy; Gittings' pass over the defence found Steve Guinan - on for the injured Jamille Matt - on the left wing, a poor touch took him wide but he was able to recover and crossed for an unmarked James Vincent at the near post to head Harriers level and spark 16 minutes of mayhem.  Four minutes later Gittings received a ball in from the left and laid it back to Vincent who advanced into the penalty area and drilled in a low shot off the post to give Harriers the lead for the first time.

On 58 minutes Guinan was provider again, this time heading down for Gittings to lash the ball past McDonald to put Harriers 4-2 ahead and seemingly in control of the game but within five minutes Aswad Thomas pulled one back, hitting a crisp volley past Lyness after Harriers had failed to properly clear a free-kick.  Four minutes later Braintree were level; Tom Sharpe brought down Thomas in the penalty area and Wright took the spot-kick, sending Lyness the wrong way.

The drama was not, done, though, as Harriers were awarded a penalty themselves on 75 minutes when Wright was brought down by McDonald.  Kyle Storer saw his poor, weakly hit, kick saved but the referee ordered a retake thanks to the eagle-eyes of the linesman who had spotted an infringement by the defence.  This time Wright took the kick and sent McDonald the wrong way despatching his sixth goal of the season and putting Harriers ahead again.

There was still action to come as both sides attacked.  Braintree's Wright hit a dipping shot just over the bar while at the other end, in stoppage time, Storer won the ball and fed it to Marc Williams who in turn set up Wright who could smell a hat-trick and snatched at his shot firing high and wide.  Still in stoppage time Vincent went close to a hat-trick also, his shot from distance narrowly missing the target.
