Harriers stretched their unbeaten run to six games, and still to lose under Steve Burr, with a last gasp winner that gave them just their second home victory over lowly Forest Green. Despite being in the relegation zone Rovers gave a good account of themselves and made it hard for Harriers to get their attacking game flowing; the game was scrappy as a result. Harriers, unchanged from the side that had drawn at Oxford the previous weekend, took the lead after eleven minutes; John Finnigan and Marc Goodfellow combining on the right with the latter sending over a great cross for Brian Smikle to head in at the far post for his ninth goal of the season. Goalmouth action was at a premium and it was not until seven minutes before the interval that Harriers, or Rovers for that matter, went close to scoring again; Robbie Matthews played the ball in from the right wing for Duane Courtney who hit a powerful drive from 20 yards out that Rovers' debutant goalkeeper Danny Ireland did well to tip over the bar. After the break the game didn't get much better as a spectacle. Both sides tried to play football but it just didn't happen for them, Harriers knocked the ball around well at times but couldn't break down the visitors again. On the hour the visitors drew level with a sloppy goal from a Harriers point of view; Curtis McDonald crossed from deep on the left and found Jon Smith in acres of space who was able to head past Dean Coleman. It was not until the later stages of the game that Harriers found another gear. A Finnigan free-kick knocked short to Gavin Caines saw the defender hit a 25-yard drive just over the bar. Nine minutes from time rovers failed to clear a corner from the left; eventually the ball dropped back into the goalmouth to substitute Damian Spencer who hit a good shot on the turn that Ireland did well to push away for a corner. With the game set to end all-square Harriers snatched victory a minute into stoppage time; a through ball down the inside-left channel found Spencer who advanced into the penalty area before despatching a shot past Ireland and into the net off the far post. |
