Harriers turned in a very disappointing performance to slump to their first defeat of the season, and their first ever defeat at Salisbury. Showing just one change from the team that beat Hayes & Yeading at the weekend, Duane Courtney coming in at full back for Liam Dolman, Harriers never got going and struggled to cope with both a terrible pitch - the grass was way too long - and an opponent that appeared far more up for it than them. Just four minutes were on the clock when Salisbury were gifted a golden chance to take the lead; Gavin Caines made a dreadful attempt at controlling the ball, sending it straight to Rob Sinclair then clumsily fouling him inside the penalty area. Matt Tubbs stepped forward to take the penalty only to see Dean Coleman dive to his left to save it. In the same fixture last season Tubbs had a penalty saved by Adam Bartlett. City enjoyed most of the possession the first half; they were quicker to the ball and stronger in the tackle all over the pitch. To Harriers' credit they did try to keep playing football, but nothing that they tried came off; their first chance of the half was a half-chance that fell to Matt Barnes-Homer; Darryl Knights' lofted pass fell just beyond his reach and he was unable to convert. At the other end sloppy defending by Harriers left both Daniel Webb and Ryan O'Hara with clear shooting opportunities but both players blazed their efforts over the bar. Just before the break Harriers finally brought home keeper James Bittner into the game as Chris McPhee rose to meet Knights' cross but headed straight at the keeper. City needed just six minutes after the interval to finally break the deadlock; Sinclair's free-kick from the right wing was met at the far post by Webb who sent a looping header back over Coleman to record his first goal of the season. On the hour Harriers had their best chance of the game; Dean Bennett's 25-yard free-kick beat the wall and was only parried by Bittner but City managed to scramble the loose ball away for a corner before any Harriers player could react. Tubbs had a similar opportunity for City but his free-kick hit the wall. Tubbs was then involved again late in the game as City looked to but the game out of Harriers' reach but Coleman dived at full stretch to keep his shot away. From the resultant corner Coleman was called into action again to keep out Stuart Anderson's shot. |
