Referee: Paul Tierney (Lancashire) |
Harriers moved back to within one place and one point of the play-offs with an accomplished win over lowly Woking that sent the visitors down into the relegation zone. Unchanged from the team that had beaten Lewes and Crawley in the previous two matches Harriers took a while to get going. The opening stages were edged, just, by Harriers but the first 20 minutes or so were very scrappy. It was not until eight minutes before the break that either side looked like breaking the deadlock; Matt Barnes-Homer's cross from the right found Russ Penn beyond the far post but he blasted his shot well over the bar. The opening goal came in first half stoppage time; Keith Lowe's free kick from deep on the right found Martin Riley in the penalty area who guided a glancing header past Danny Knowles in the Woking goal. After the break Harriers began to find another gear and midway through the half doubled their advantage; Barnes-Homer on the left sprayed a pass across the field to Justin Richards on the opposite flank who beat Knowles with a chip, possible mis-hit, from 25 yards out that sailed over the keeper and into the far corner of the net for his 19th goal of the season. Soon afterwards Barnes-Homer went close with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area that came through a crowd of legs, Knowles saw it late and did well to push it away. Richards should have score another eleven minutes from the end; Penn set Barnes-Homer away on the right and his cross found Richards at the far post but he headed straight at the keeper. Five minutes from the end Woking finally forced Adam Bartlett into action, but Joel Ledgister's free-kick was an easy catch for him after it had beaten the wall. In the last minute Harriers had another good chance; Brian Smikle made a good run through the Cards defence on the left before over-hitting his pass to Brittain on the opposite flank, Brittain recovered the ball, however, and crossed to the far post where Barnes-HOmer hit a shot that beat Knowles only to come back off the post with nobody following up. The win was completed in stoppage time; Brittain's pass sent Stefan Moore into the penalty area through the inside-right channel, his cross into the middle found Chris McPhee who headed in from close range to record his first goal for the club. |
