Match Report by St@tto

Harriers recorded their third consecutive away win in impressive style, extending their unbeaten run to six games, and seriously denting struggling Halifax's hopes of avoiding relegation.

Showing just one change to the side that had drawn with Altrincham at the weekend, Andy Ferrell coming in for Darryl Knights, Harriers were soon on the attack and looking dangerous.  A Jeff Kenna cross from deep on the right picked out Iyseden Christie unmarked in the penalty area who had more time than he realised and headed wide.

The opening goal was not long in coming, however, Kenna's throw from the right fell to Russ Penn 25 yards or more from goal who unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner that left Craig Mawson grasping at thin air.  After 21 minutes Harriers doubled the advantage; Alex Jeannin won the ball on the edge of the Harriers penalty area and launched a long pass down the wing; Christie beat the offside trap, got to the byline and pulled the ball back to the far post where Penn was waiting on the edge of the penalty area to drive a low shot past Mawson into the bottom corner.

A good move ten minutes before the break should have given Harriers a third; Matt Barnes-Homer chased the ball down on the right, knocked it back to Penn who fed it to Simon Russell; the winger played it square to Andy Ferrell who saw his powerful shot well saved by Mawson for a corner.  The third goal arrived soon after, though, Russell's pass through the inside-left channel sent Christie clear who waited for Mawson to commit himself before clipping the ball over him to record his 16th goal of the season.

Harriers were not done yet and two minutes later scored again; Christie was fouled just outside the penalty area and Penn fired home the free-kick around the wall and into the top corner to complete his first hat-trick in a Harriers shirt.  Christie set up Jeannin before the interval but the full-back's first-time shot from distance flew high and wide.  In stoppage time The Shaymen pulled a goal back after Ferrell was adjudged to have handled in the penalty area and Jon Shaw sent Dean Coleman the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Booed off the field at the break, Halifax changed their formation at the interval and came out for the second half more determined.  For the first ten minutes or so of the second half Town dominated possession, knocking  the ball around well in harmless midfield areas and shooting from distance.  Anthony Griffith, former Harrier Simon Heslop and Andy Campbell could all have given the home team a lifeline had they been more accurate with their shooting but Harriers soaked up the pressure and were soon back in control of the match.

A great run by Christie into the penalty area was ended by Mawson, who was lucky not to be sent-off, and Ferrell scored his first goal for the club from the penalty spot.  The rout was completed 12 minutes from the end; Penn picking up the ball from a Halifax defensive mix-up and surging through the inside-right channel past three defenders before slotting the ball beyond Mawson.  He became the first Harriers player to score four times in the same game since Paul Davies scored 6 against Penycae in the Welsh FA Cup in October 1987 and the first to manage the feat away from home since Peter Wassall scored 4 at Barry Town in September 1973.  The last time Harriers scored six away from home was in December 1996, beating Hednesford Town 6-1 in the Bob Lord Trophy and the last time that they did it in a league game away from Aggborough was in March 1986 winning 6-2 at Cheltenham Town.
