Match Report by St@tto

Shocking defending sent Harriers tumbling to defeat against high-flying Torquay and ended their three-game winning streak at Aggborough.

New loan signing goalkeeper Chris MacKenzie was thrown straight into the side for his debut, with Dean Coleman being relegated to the subs' bench despite his fractured finger.  Apart from that there were no changes to the side that had beaten Droylsden in midweek.  Torquay arrived at Aggborough with the best scoring record in the division and enhanced the position comfortably with MacKenzie being given a baptism of fire for his first appearance in a Harriers shirt.

The writing was on the wall for Harriers as early as the 13th minute when MacKenzie's clearance fell to Paul Hinshelwood on the half-way line who lobbed it straight back over the keeper's head, MacKenzie did manage to scramble back to get a hand on it but could only help it on its way.  Harriers contributed to the game themselves when going forward and were a match for their visitors; James Constable forced saves from Simon Rayner in The Gulls' goal on a couple of occasions while Jonny Harkness' long-range effort went harmlessly over the bar.

Ten minutes before the break Torquay went further ahead; MacKenzie flapped at a right-wing corner, helping it on to the far post where Tim Sills arrived ahead of Mark Creighton to head it over the line.  Constable brought another good low save from Rayner with a shot on the turn from 25 yards out but United attacked swiftly and went further ahead moments later; Chris Zebroski beating the motionless Harriers defence, who were waiting for an offside flag that never came, leaving him clear on goal and he took the ball around MacKenzie - who thought better of making a challenge and giving away a penalty - and rolled it into the net from a narrow angle.

Shortly after the break Harriers could have got themselves back into the game had Rayner not made a good save to keep out Andy Ferrell's shot that was curling towards the top corner.  A needless free-kick in midfield led to the fourth goal; Kevin Nicholson's dead ball pumped forward into the penalty area found an unmarked Zebroski who headed past MacKenzie.

Harkness and Justin Richards combined to feed the ball to Michael Blackwood on the left wing after 66 minutes and his cross found Constable who headed past Rayner for his eighth goal of the season.  Constable then did well to chase down a long ball on the right wing and keep it in play, knocking it back to Simon Russell whose cross was met by the diving header of Richards who guided it narrowly past the post.  With 15 minutes left Constable made a good run to the byline on the right, pulling the ball back to Richards whose shot was somehow kept out by Hinshelwood who managed to throw himself in front of it.

Had that gone in it could have made for an interesting finale but instead Torquay went straight back up the field and made the score 5-1 through Lee Phillips who drilled a shot past MacKenzie.  Constable, however, was not finished and pulled another goal back - his ninth of the season - after 77 minutes racing on to a through ball before slotting a low shot past Rayner into the bottom corner.  There was not to be, however, a rousing finale and Harriers slumped to their third defeat conceding five goals of the season.
