Referee: Graham Scott (Oxfordshire) |
Despite playing the last quarter of the game with ten men, Harriers held on for a deserved point and stretched their unbeaten league run to three games. Rob Davies, newly signed on loan from WBA made his debut in the centre of the Harriers midfield forcing Russ Penn out onto the right wing while Simon Russell returned on the opposite flank in place of the departed Craig Nelthorpe. Davies had a great start to his debut, in the second minute his searching pass picked out Penn on the right flank who cut inside his marker and tucked a low shot under Paul Jones in the home goal to give Harriers the lead. The early goal knocked the stuffing out of the home team and silenced their supporters for a time but gradually they began to get into the game and put pressure on the Harriers back line. Lee Phillips gave Jeff Kenna the runaround and started to created chances for City; his run set up Adam Stansfield but his shot hit Mark Creighton and went out for a corner. Midway through the half Jon Challinor's run on the left beat the offside trap, he got to the byline and pulled the ball back across the face of goal but fortunately for Harriers there was nobody there to apply the finishing touch. The equaliser eventually came, and again the attack came from the City left, Andy Taylor jinked into the penalty area and pulled the ball back into the goalmouth where ex-Harrier Billy Jones stabbed it past Scott Bevan. Five minutes later Jones should have put The Grecians into the lead; Penn brought him down as he tried to break into the Harriers penalty area. Jones himself took the penalty but his shot hit straight was kept out by the trailing foot of Bevan as he dived to his left. After the break Harriers had to soak up a lot of pressure but their defence stood firm, they even had chances to take the lead themselves; Davies fired a 25-yard free-kick just over the bar. Their job was made much harder after 68 minutes when Reuben Reid was sent-off. Chasing a seemingly lost cause into the corner he did well to keep the ball in play but after dribbling into the penalty area he fell over rather too theatrically, City skipper Chris Todd accused him of diving and the youngster reacted by thrusting his head into the City defender's face and referee Scott had no hesitation in showing him the red card. Despite the handicap of one fewer men Harriers pressed on and looked for a winner; eight minutes from time Simon Russell crossed from the left for Gavin Hurren who headed wide of the far post, a stronger touch would have turned it in. At the death Russell himself broke free but just as he was about to shoot the ball was nicked off his toe by a well timed tackle from Todd. |
