Match Report by St@tto

Simon Russell's strike a minute from the end ended Harriers' goal-drought at 505 minutes and maintained their hoodoo over Cambridge United who haven't beaten them since September 1959.

As expected there were changes to the team, and another new formation; Gavin Hurren came into the team in a defensive midfield position, both wingers were dropped, Jamie McClen was recalled and Michael McGrath made his first start of the season.  On the bench was veteran striker "Super" Bob Taylor who had signed non-contract forms earlier in the day.

Despite being bottom of the league Cambridge came at Harriers from the start with noisy backing from supporters.  The home team could have taken the lead after just ten minutes; Scott Bevan flapped at a corner from the left and the ball fell to Robert Wolleaston 20 yards out, his shot rattled the crossbar and bounced down on the line and was scrambled away to safety.  The game settled down into a midfield battle, Harriers soaked up United pressure but did little with their own possession leaving Iyseden Christie and Luke Reynolds isolated in attack.  Harriers' best chance of the half came midway through, Russ Penn found Hurren who carried the ball forward but his shot from distance was wayward and didn't trouble Paul Crichton in the home goal.  At the other end a run from Trevor Robinson set up Wolleaston whose shot was pushed away by Bevan.

By the end of the first half Harriers had silenced the home crowd but after the break they were behind their team again and encouraging them onto the attack; Courtney Pitt's cross-shot from the left flashed across the face of goal just out of reach of Marcus Richardson.  On the hour Richardson went close again with a shot on the turn and then soon after Pitt hit a 25-yard free-kick wide of the far post.

Eventually Crichton was called into action 20 minutes from time; McClen found McGrath who crossed from the left for substitute Andy White whose looping header was weak and easy for Crichton to gather.  United went ahead moments later; sloppy defending by Harriers left Jon Brady unmarked at the far post to head in Pitt's right-wing corner.  A couple of minutes later Brady could have doubled the lead; the lively Pitt left Jeff Kenna for dead and crossed from the left, Bevan flapped at the cross and it fell to Brady who saw his effort blocked.

With two minutes left Jonny Harkness almost leveled the scores with a 20-yard free-kick that clipped the wall and went over the bar for a corner.  Harriers were stepping up the pressure by now, as usual leaving it late, and grabbed an equaliser with a minute left on the clock, Simon Russell picked up the ball and ran at the home defence before beating Crichton with a 25-yard lob.  Deep in stoppage time Russell made another run at the home defence into the penalty area, this time Crichton turned his shot around the near post for a corner.  From the corner, however, McGrath's cross found the head of Bob Taylor who headed over with the goal at his mercy.
