Match Report by St@tto

Harriers' final away trip of the season was yet another disappointment as they threw away the points in a terrible first half that saw them three-down at the break.

The return of Johnny Mullins and Michael Blackwood from suspension did little to improve Harriers who were second best throughout a dull first half that had a real end-of-season air to it.  The home side took the lead ten minutes before the break; Sam Saunders broke into the penalty area on the right and hit a shot from a narrow angle that took a deflection on the way past Dan Lewis.

Before the break Saunders could have doubled the score with a 20 yard free kick but Lewis managed to punch it away.  The second goal did arrive soon after, however.  Paul Benson was allowed to stroll past the Harriers back-line and pulled the ball back from the goalline to Craig mackail-Smith at the near post who was left with a easy tap in.  Worse was to come for Harrier before the break; a quickly taken free-kick on the left put Chris Moor in space in the penalty area and he rolled the ball into the path of Mackail-Smith for another easy tap in.

After the break Harriers switched to a more conventional 4-4-2 formation and the introduction of Lee Thompson livened things up a little but they had left themselves far to big a mountain to climb.  Gareth Sheldon had Harriers' first decent chance of the game ten minutes into the second half but his shot from the edge of the penalty area was straight at Tony Roberts in the Dagenham goal.  Ten minutes late Blackwood went close with a free-kick that dipped just over the bar.

Harriers' afternoon was summed-up moments later when they were awarded a penalty Glen Southam upended Blackwood; a golden chance for Harriers to start to get back into the game was wasted as Jon Newby hit the spot-kick weakly and Roberts dived to his right to save.

The home team were able to relax for the rest of the game, comfortable in their lead and Lewis was not troubled in the Harriers goal.  Harriers huffed and puffed a lot for the remainder of the game but never looked like getting anything out of it.  In stoppage time Thompson had a good opportunity to net a consolation but headed wide at the far post from Blackwood's left-wing cross.
