Match Report by St@tto

Harriers staged another late recovery to get out of jail with all three points when at 90 minutes it looked as though they were going to suffer their first home defeat of the season.

Unchanged from the side that won at Cambridge on Bank Holiday Monday Harriers would have hoped for a repeat performance and result.  They eventually got the result but the performance to get there was very disappointing.  Canvey came to Aggborough with a plan to stop Harriers from playing and it worked well, closing down quickly and playing long balls forward.

There was a disastrous start for Harriers when they gifted Canvey a goal after four minutes; John Danby, who was clearly under instructions to play the ball out short to his defenders, rolled the ball to Wayne Hatswell who was immediately under pressure from two visiting attackers; he avoided them but passed across the face of goal, Danby rushed out but not quickly enough and Kezie Ibe intercepted and was left with an easy finish.

Harriers could not get their game going in the first half; it seemed that they had underestimated the visitors who were able to keep them at bay.  There was a flicker of hope for Harriers when Iyseden Christie had the ball in the net after 12 minutes but his effort was ruled out for offside.  The game became bogged down in midfield and turned into a very dour encounter.  Ten minutes before the break Lee Boylan went close to doubling the lead with a dipping shot from 25 yards that went just over the bar.

Terry Fleming fired into the side netting from well outside the penalty area shortly before the break and then moments later Harriers were level.  Finally able to get the ball down and string a few passes together a sweeping move begun by Hatswell and Daryl Burgess ended with Simon Heslop sliding the ball through the inside left channel to Fleming who outpaced the defence and took it around Richard McKinney in the visitors' goal and rolled it into the empty net.

The half-time team talk clearly had an effect on Harriers who were much better in the second half and created more opportunities to take the lead.  O'Connor set Hatswell away on the left and his cross was fractionally too high for Christie to get his head to.  Shortly afterwards a free-kick from Laurie Wilson on the left curled wickedly into the goalmouth but Burgess wasn't able to stretch enough to reach it.

Harriers pressed for another goal but it just would not come.  Taiwo Atieno knocked the ball down to Lee Thompson, on for Michael Blackwood whose half-time return had lasted less than 15 minutes, and threaded it through to Christie who found the net but again was offside.  A Wilson corner from the right found the head of Mark Jackson but he headed over the bar and then a run from midfield by the lively Wilson set up Christie on the left who curled a shot wide of the far post.

At the other end Canvey were not done yet and a long range shot from Stuart Bimson was tipped around the post by Danby at the expense of a corner with five minutes left.  Shortly afterwards it looked as though the visitors had the game won; Wayne Evans brought down Jon Keeling in the penalty area and Boylan converted the penalty al;though Danby diving to his left got a hand on it but could not keep it out.

The game was already in stoppage time when Christie burst into the penalty area t the other end only to be brought down by McKinney.  Referee Lewis had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot and showed McKinney the red card.  Sub keeper Ashley Harrison's first act was to pick the ball out of the net as Atieno struck his fourth goal of the season to bring Harriers level.  There was more drama to come yet, however, Wilson won possession in midfield and made a surging run forwards before rolling the ball into Christie's path and he hit a blistering drive from outside he penalty area that gave Harrison no chance, especially with the deflection off a defender on the way.

It is often said that the mark of a good side that they can play badly and still win.  Harriers achieved that against Canvey who will be very disappointed to return home empty handed.
