Match Report by St@tto

After the euphoria of their midweek win at Oxford Harriers were brought back down to earth when two goals in the last 17 minutes from Orient's Andy Scott denied them a second consecutive away win.

Harriers went with the same sixteen players as used at Oxford with the exception of goalkeeping sub Daniel Lewis who returned in place of the departed Ryan clarke.  In the starting line-up the only change was Ian Foster coming in for Jamie Gleeson who took his place on the bench.  There was no place in the Orient line-up for Billy Jones who was recently linked with a move to Aggborough.

The visitors began the game in the same determined style with which they had played the game at The Kassam Stadium and took an early lead after just 11 minutes when top-scorer Foster added his sixth goal of the season; Tom Bennett and Dean Keates exchanged passes in the approach with Bennett slipping the ball through to Blair Sturrock who mis-hit his shot, he ball deflecting off a defender and into the path of Foster who pounced to force it home from the left-hand side of the penalty area.  A minute later Harriers should have doubled their led, Keates hit Lee Harrison's left-hand post and the ball cannoned back to Sturrock, his shot went wide of the far post but Harrison must have got a fingertip to it as Harriers were awarded a corner.

At the other end Orient went close with a free kick from dead-ball specialist Matt Lockwood whose 25-yard shot beat the wall but went straight to John Danby in the Harriers goal.  Winger Derek Duncan was lively on the Orient left and created a number of problems for the Harriers defence but fortunately his teammates were unable to capitalise.  Harriers had another good chance to increase their lead before the break; a deep free kick from Bennett was knocked down by Gary Birch, again playing in midfield, to Sturrock whose shot was well saved by Harrison at the expense of a corner.

Harriers were to rue their missed chances of the first half; after the break the home team attacked from the outset pinning Harriers back deep inside their own half.  Duncan made a good run on the left wing, holding Johnny Mullins off all the way, and cut inside before shooting only to see Danby palm the shot away and Scott, following up blazed over the bar.  Duncan had another chance with a 25-yard shot that was deflected away for a corner before Daryl mcMahon tried his luck from even further out that only just missed the target with Danby beaten.

The relentless pressure was almost too much for Harriers, whenever they did manage to get the ball clear there was nobody in attack to hold it up and provide a respite so it came straight back.  Eventually Orient's onslaught paid off, the ball was crossed from the left and headed clear by Mullins only as far as Scott who drilled his shot low through the crowded penalty area to break Harriers' resistance and level the scores.  Not content with equalising Orient continued to attack and seven minutes from the end Lockwood's corner from the left dropped invitingly to Scott, unmarked inside the penalty area, who had an easy job of firing in the winner.

Harriers had no answer, even with Foster pushed up into attack alongside Chris Beardsley, and on occasion Simon Weaver also; instead they had to leave East London with no points from a game that they had a great chance to have taken all three from and with other results not going their way are now six points from safety at the foot of the table.
