Match Report by St@tto

Harriers slumped back to the bottom of the Football League after a disappointing performance at Roots Hall that saw Abdou Sall sent off for the third time in his Harriers career.

Jan Molby gave a debut to new loan signing Shaun Cooper at right back but there was no place in the squad for Iyseden Christie whose foot injury suffered a reaction to last weekend's brief appearance against Macclesfield.  For Southend, former Harriers striker Drewe Broughton was left on the subs' bench.

In a dull opening period Harriers had some early chances; Youssou Diop headed wide and Kelvin Langmead had a shot blocked for a corner but it was The Shrimpers who took the lead after 26 minutes.  Mark Gower began the move in midfield picking out Lawrie Dudfield on the right wing, he had space to run into and knocked the ball square across the front of the penalty area to Gower who had continued his run and he swept the ball past John Danby and inside the far post.  Harriers had their task made even more difficult two minutes before the break when Sall kicked out at Dudfield and was shown the red card by referee Hegley.

Forced into a reshuffle at the interval Harriers sacrificed an attacking option in Diop, replacing him with Chris McHale to shore up the defence and try to ensure that the scoreline didn't get any worse.  Forced back into their own half for most of the second period Harriers were to rely on Danby to keep the score down.  Twice within as many minutes at the start of the half Kevin Maher went close to doubling the lead; first his goalbound shot was headed away by Richie Appleby and then his header from Tes Bramble's cross was straight at Danby.

Danby was called upon again and again to keep the home team at bay; a free kick from Mark Bentley and shots from Dudfield, Bramble and Carl Pettefer were all beaten away by the keeper.  The only Harriers effort in the second half fell to Wayne Hatswell but he was unable to find the target.

Molby now has to find a way to lift his low-on-confidence troops in time for the midweek trip to Bristol Rovers in the LDV Vans Trophy and hope that the break from League action will prove a welcome distraction.
