Match Report by St@tto

Lacklustre Harriers find themselves back in the thick of the relegation battle after losing to a solitary goal at Brunton Park.  A Man-Of-The-Match performance from Harriers keeper John Danby was all in vain after Craig Farrell's shot finally beat him with eleven minutes of the game remaining.

Until Farrell's late strike Danby, who was the only Harriers player to come out of the game with any credit, had been all that stood in the way of an embarrassingly heavy defeat.  With his selection options limited by injuries and suspension, Jan Molby brought Lee Jenkins back into the side in midfield and gave Matt Gadsby his first start of the season in the centre of the defence in place of the departed Adrian Viveash.

The home team took the game to Harriers from the start and their performance belied their position at the bottom of the league.  After just eight minutes they could have taken the lead, Brendan McGill found space on the right and his cross found Andy Preece whose glancing header hit the far post and rebounded away to safety.  Soon afterwards Peter Duffield saw his shot blocked by Harriers' skipper Wayne Hatswell and then he fired the rebound wide.  A Paul Simpson corner just before the half hour mark caused problems for the Harriers defence and Kevin Gray, raiding from the back, headed over the bar.

As an attacking force Harriers showed nothing in the first half, content instead to soak up pressure and maybe settle for the point.  All they mustered was a couple of Mark Yates shots that failed to find the target.  At the other end Danby was still on the top of his game, fortunately, and made the best save of the half seven minutes before the interval; Gadsby hesitated on the ball, unsure whether to let the keeper claim it or clear it, eventually deciding to boot it away; the clearance went straight to Simpson 40 yards out who spotted Danby off his line and tried his luck but the keeper managed to get back into position and clawed it away one-handed.  By this time Danby had also kept out efforts from Farrell, Duffield and McGill as The Cumbrians threw everything forward.

After the break Harriers showed a bit more application and could have snatched the lead when good battling by Simon Brown allowed him space to cross from the right to the far post where the ball found Leon Clarke who blasted over the bar.  Soon afterwards Danby was finally beaten by Simpson's 30 yard effort but was saved by the woodwork as United hit the post for the second time in the game.

Just before the hour United felt that they should have been awarded a penalty, McGill went down under a challenge from Scott Stamps but the Harriers man had taken the ball and referee Laws waved play on.  Soon afterwards Harriers had their best chance of the game; Jesper Christiansen, on for the ineffective Clarke, received the ball on the edge of the penalty area with a clear sight of goal but could only direct his shot straight at Matt Glennon who pushed it away for a corner.

Eventually Harriers' resistance crumbled under pressure, McGill played the ball in from the right and Kelvin Langmead chested it down into the path of Farrell who swept his shot through a crowd of legs and into the bottom corner of the net giving Danby no chance.  Then, with two minutes left they could have doubled their advantage when McGill hit a shot from 20-yards but Danby was equal to it, diving low to his left to turn it round the post for a corner.
