Match Report by St@tto |
One mistake by Adrian Viveash was to prove costly for Harriers who had to settle for a draw with high-flying Hull City. Harriers matched their guests for most of the game and withstood considerable in the second half as The Tigers tried to maintain their winning run. As expected Jan Molby made changes to the side that had drawn at Lincoln in the previous game, Adam Murray returned to the side while Leon Clarke was given his first start; out went Matt Gadsby and Ian Foster who both dropped down to the bench. The windy conditions made good football difficult but both teams tried hard and the game became quite entertaining without much real goalmouth incident. Harriers took the lead after 21 minutes; Murray received the ball in the centre of the field and slipped a defence-splitting pass through the heart of the Hull back-line to Simon Brown who took one touch to control the ball and take it away from his marker before firing a crisp shot into the top corner of the net. By this time The Tigers had already suffered one setback with the loss of right-back Lee Marshall. The defender had gone in for a 50-50 ball with Scott Stamps with the Harriers man winning the ball and Marshall left writhing on the floor in agony. He was stretchered off the field with a broken leg. The visitors felt that they should have had a penalty on the half-hour mark; Danny Allsopp made a break into the Harriers penalty area and went down under a challenge from Viveash. Referee Trevor Kettle was having none of it, felling that Allsopp had dived, and waved play on; players from both sides were soon involved in a scuffle that ended with yellow cards being shown to Viveash and Hull's Ryan France. Soon afterwards Hull went close to an equaliser with a free kick outside the area that Stuart Green struck against the crossbar. Within minutes Harriers were on the defensive again when they failed to clear their lines again but Ben Burgess blasted the ball way over the bar. After the interval Hull stepped up the pressure and two minutes into the new half they won a free kick on the left. The ball was not cleared by the Harriers defence and fell to France who saw his shot charged down by Craig Hinton. Allsopp then played Stuart Elliott in on the left; his shot was well parried by John Danby but it fell into the path of Burgess; before he could shoot, however, he was denied by a great challenge from Wayne Hatswell. Just before the hour Harriers should have doubled their advantage, Stamps' corner from the right found Viveash at the far post but his goalbound header was cleared off the line. Harriers were left to rue that miss ten minutes later when Viveash was caught in possession by Elliott who stole the ball off him and advanced on goal; instead of shooting he picked out Burgess on the opposite flank who drilled a low shot past Danby. Harriers had to be thankful that Hull could not shoot properly, the visitors had a string of chances but solid defending by Harriers forced them into shooting from long range and none of them troubled Danby. As the game drew to a close it looked as though Hull were the most likely to win the game as they had more possession; Harriers were still playing well but were not creating much in attack, not creating much that is until the last minute of the game when they almost snatched victory thanks to a flash of brilliance from John Williams. Picking up the ball on the left he turned well to get away from his marker and struck a shot that had Boaz Myhill in the Hull goal grasping at air, unfortunately, however, it struck the crossbar and rebounded away to safety. |
