Match Report
Bad Harriers turned up and the good work of the victory over York in midweek was not carried on into this disappointing defeat. After falling behind to an early goal Harriers faced an uphill struggle which they were not up to.

Carl Hutchings, a pre-season target of the Harriers, needed just 75 seconds to open the scoring, stealing in at the far post to turn in Rawle's low left-wing cross. Rawle almost doubled the lead, but put the ball over when it should have been easier to score. Ian Foster set up Colin Larkin but he was denied by the alert Flahaven in the home goal and Dean Bennett shot wide as Harriers failed to find the attacking fluency that they were hoping for. Stuart Brock was the busier of the two keepers parrying Bramble's shot and breathing a sigh of relief as Rawle's follow-up found the side netting.

The second period was no better, Harriers enjoyed large amounts of possession but were unable to break down the resolute Shrimpers defence. Brock, however, again saw more action, saving Johnson's free-kick and then watching Hutchings' long range shot go narrowly wide. Broughton and Sall both went close for Harriers but Flahaven didn't have a save to make all afternoon and the game fizzled out with Southend glad to keep the narrow lead that they held.
